Overview

The trip

Turkey spans two continents and was the seat of both the Byzantine and Ottoman empires.

In Istanbul, students visit Hagia Sophia, built as a Byzantine cathedral and later an Ottoman mosque, Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar. In Ankara, Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Atatürk, and the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations explain how a modern republic was built from an empire. In Cappadocia, the rock-cut churches of Göreme Open Air Museum show how early Christian communities lived.
