Subject

Sustainability study trips

Sustainability is easiest to understand where it is being tried. These trips take students to forests that supply a country's water, cities redesigned around energy and green space, and farms and reserves balancing livelihoods with wildlife. Students measure, interview and weigh trade-offs with the engineers, rangers, farmers and planners doing the work, and return with ideas to test at home.

On the trip

What students explore

  • Kenya's water towers

Mount Kenya and the Aberdares, mountain forests that feed the rivers supplying millions of Kenyans.

  • Cities, rainforests and palm oil

Singapore's planned city alongside Malaysia's rainforests and palm oil estates.

  • Coffee, cities and cloud forests

Bogotá, Medellín and Colombia's Coffee Region, in one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth.

  • Explain how forests, water and energy systems support people and wildlife
  • Weigh the trade-offs between livelihoods, development and conservation in a real place
  • Describe how a city or region measures and plans for a sustainable future
