Overview
World Youth Day Seoul 2027, from 3 to 8 August under the theme “Take courage!”, is the second to be held in Asia, after Manila in 1995.
Before the main events, students study the heritage behind Seoul's welcome. Korea's Catholic community began with Korean scholars in the 1780s, before any priest had arrived, and grew through generations of persecution. Students visit Myeongdong Cathedral, Korea's first Gothic-style cathedral and the seat of the Archdiocese of Seoul, the Seosomun Shrine History Museum and the Jeoldusan Martyrs' Shrine, and contrast them with Dongdaemun Design Plaza, Zaha Hadid's landmark of contemporary design.
During World Youth Day week, students take part in the official programme: the opening Mass on 3 August, catechesis sessions and a youth festival, the Way of the Cross, the overnight pilgrimage vigil, and the closing Mass on 8 August. Daily reflection sessions connect what students experience to what they have learned about Korea's Church and its architecture, and each student keeps a reflective journal.
