Overview

The trip

Baku puts a medieval walled city, Soviet and oil-boom architecture, and some of the 21st century's boldest buildings within sight of each other.

Students explore the UNESCO-listed Old City with the Maiden Tower and the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, study Zaha Hadid's Heydar Aliyev Center, a flowing building with no sharp corners, and see the Flame Towers and the Carpet Museum, shaped like a rolled carpet.
