Overview

The trip

Rotterdam, Hamburg and Copenhagen become a living classroom, where buildings reveal how architecture can solve real problems, not just look good solving them.

Students start in Rotterdam, home to OMA, MVRDV and Bjarke Ingels' early work, a city built by architects known for radical, headline-making solutions to urban density, housing and public space.

The journey continues to Hamburg, where HafenCity, Europe's largest urban redevelopment project, turns a former harbour into a working district, and the Elbphilharmonie shows a 1960s warehouse reborn as a world-class concert hall, its original structure carrying an entirely new building on top.

The trip finishes in Copenhagen, where CopenHill turns a waste-to-energy power plant into a public ski slope and climbing wall, and floating neighbourhoods respond directly to the practical challenge of rising water levels. Students leave asking not “is it beautiful” but “does it work.”
