Overview

The trip

This trip turns Berlin, Prague and Vienna into a living classroom, where buildings reveal how architecture responds to ideology, war and political division.

Students trace the origins of modern design at Berlin's Bauhaus Archive and examine how a divided city rebuilt itself at the Berlin Wall Memorial and Tempelhof Airport, a Nazi-era airport reimagined as public park and open space.

The journey continues to Prague, the only city with a significant body of Cubist architecture, where students study the House of the Black Madonna alongside Frank Gehry's Dancing House, a deconstructivist building built into a centuries-old streetscape on a former WWII bomb site.

A highlight is Vienna's Gemeindebauten, the municipal housing estates regarded as one of the world's most successful public housing models, where students see the ideals introduced in Berlin applied and working at city scale today.
