Overview

The trip

The Great Rift Valley is Earth's crust pulling apart in slow motion, and Kenya is one of the best places in the world to see it.

Students view the escarpment, hike Hell's Gate's gorge and steam vents, and visit the Olkaria geothermal field to see how heat from beneath the crust powers homes. They study freshwater Lake Naivasha and soda-lake Nakuru, part of the UNESCO-listed Kenya Lake System. Fieldwork includes mapping the fault scarp, testing water chemistry and recording land use.
