Overview

The trip

For a thousand years the coast was a meeting point of Africa, Arabia, India and, later, Europe.

In Mombasa, students explore Fort Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built by the Portuguese in the 1590s, and the Old Town. At Gedi, near Malindi, they walk through a Swahili town abandoned centuries ago. In Bagamoyo, a caravan terminus and slave-trade port, they study the history of the trade and its abolition. In Zanzibar, Stone Town's Old Fort, the House of Wonders and the former slave market site, now an Anglican cathedral and memorial, show how Omani rule, trade and the slave trade shaped the island.
