Overview

The trip

This trip traces entrepreneurship in India from its oldest cottage industries to its newest technology startups.

In Varanasi, students enter the workshops of Banarasi silk weavers, a centuries-old, GI-protected craft still woven by hand on pit looms, and see how traditional weaving houses are building new businesses selling directly to customers worldwide online. In Surat, students explore the city's diamond-cutting and polishing industry, one of the largest in the world, alongside its historic textile trade, two industries built on precision craft at industrial scale.

The trip closes in Bengaluru, India's technology capital, where students engage with the startup ecosystem driving the country's modern entrepreneurial economy, a direct contrast to the handloom and cutting workshops studied earlier in the trip.
